Burnaby mayor slams new provincial housing legislation
The province of British Columbia plans to end single-family zoned neighborhoods and allow for townhomes, triplexes, and laneway homes on single-family lots. However, Burnaby Mayor Mike Hurley is critical of the new legislation, stating that it is a massive change and raises concerns about speculation, taxation, and infrastructure. He believes there should have been more consultation with municipalities and questions the provincial government's expertise in planning. The new rules will also eliminate parking requirements for projects near frequent transit. Burnaby's bylaws must comply with the provincial rules by June next year.
