North Vancouver Area Info.

History

It began as an exchange of gifts, an overture of friendship between two distinct groups of people.

In 1792, Captain George Vancouver and his ships entered Burrard Inlet and were greeted by the First Nations who were settled on the North Shore. The Captain and his crew were bestowed with gifts of fish and in return, the First Nations people received iron.

The first industry in North Vancouver was a lumber mill around which the company and town of Moodyville grew. Once the most advanced community on Burrard Inlet, Moodyville was primarily led by Sewell Prescott Moody, the first entrepreneur to export BC lumber on a successful and continuing basis, both to the US and overseas. His accomplishments benefited this growing industry and helped establish the harbour of Burrard Inlet as Canada’s principle port on the Pacific.

Rapid development began to take shape in the beginning of the 20th Century, with the City of North Vancouver incorporating in 1907. During this time, the area’s role as the transportation hub of the North Shore began to expand readily. People traveled up and down Lonsdale using BC electric streetcars. They accessed the North Shore from the mainland by ferry service. The shipyards at the foot of Lonsdale have always been a focal point for the area, with Wallace Shipyards opening in 1906. Today, this area is undergoing major re-development, and much of its heritage will remain intact.

Population

According to the national statistical agency, Statistics Canada, the City’s population at the time of the 2001 national census was 44,303.
